Charlotte-Area Lawyer Nancy Black Norelli Re-Elected To Second Term As State Bar Councilor

North Carolina State Bar Oversees the Legal Profession In North Carolina

November 20, 2012

Charlotte-area lawyer and former district court judge Nancy Black Norelli has been re-elected to another term as a State Bar Councilor by her colleagues in the Mecklenburg County Bar. The State Bar is comprised of 62 councilors elected by their home communities to regulate over 20,000 licensed lawyers in North Carolina. Mecklenburg has seven councilors who each serve a three-year term.

The State Bar investigates and prosecutes attorneys who violate the State Bar’s code of ethics for lawyers, also known as their Rules of Professional Conduct. Norelli currently serves on the State Bar’s Ethics, Administrative and Facilities committees. In addition, she is on the Editorial Board of the State Bar Journal.

Norelli also currently chairs the North Carolina Bar Association Judicial Performance Evaluation committee that recently surveyed North Carolina lawyers to rate judicial incumbents and challengers in the District and Superior Court contested races in the areas of integrity and fairness, legal ability, professionalism, communication, and administrative skills – characteristics essential for good judges. North Carolina is the first state in the nation to rate judicial candidates in contested judicial races. Already, aspects of this process are becoming a model for other states, including those that have retention elections.

Norelli brings over 30 years of legal experience – including dozens of jury trials - to her work. In addition, she has been a visiting lecturer at Davidson College, UNC-Charlotte and the Charlotte School of Law. She is also heavily involved in the community through volunteerism and pro bono work, is a founding member of Good Friends and on the boards of a number of local charities, including the American Cancer Society where she is a breast cancer survivor speaker. In addition, Norelli shares her legal knowledge through the mentoring of young lawyers.
